This award supports the research and teaching careers of talented early career faculty in the chemical sciences. The award, which requires an institutional nomination, is based on an independent body of scholarship attained in the early years of their appointment, as well as a demonstrated commitment to education, and provides an unrestricted research grant of $100,000. Recommendations for awards are based upon compelling evidence that the nominee's independent scholarly research has led to important advances in the chemical sciences and will continue to do so. 


 


To be eligible to apply, faculty must meet all of the following criteria: 



  • Must be a faculty member of chemistry, biochemistry, materials chemistry, or chemical engineering.

  • Hold a full-time tenure track academic appointment focused on the chemical sciences.

  • From Ph.D. Granting departments in which scholarly research is a principal activity and undergraduate education is an important component.

  • Are within the first six years of their independent academic careers at the time of submission of the nomination.*Awardees tend to be close to the end of their eligibility window, but all eligible candidates are welcome to apply.

  • Renominations are accepted.


 

Submission Process

Limited submissions MUST be coordinated with the Office of the Vice President for Research.

If interested in applying for this opportunity, please submit the following as a single PDF to Corporate & Foundation Relations (USCCFR@sc.edu) by 5pm on January 12th

  • Letter of nomination (limited to two pages) from your dean or department chair highlighting your research and teaching accomplishments. This letter may contain institutional and departmental descriptive information
  • A summary description of the nominee's research accomplishments as an independent faculty member, and a description of future research plans (limited to 5 pages, including references, with use of one graphic encouraged).
  • A statement that illustrates the nominee's efforts in education in the chemical sciences (limited to two pages).
  • A CV (limited to 4 pages), which includes a list of publications in which the corresponding author and undergraduate coauthors are clearly identified. Research support should be indicated.
